Block Blast Removed from Google Play Store, Now Back

Block Blast, the popular puzzle game comparable to Tetris, was recently unavailable on Google’s Play Store but remains accessible on the iOS App Store. Currently, the game does not show up in the Play Store's charts, search results, or on the developer Hungry Studio's page. We reached out to both Hungry Studio and Google for clarification, but have yet to receive a response. However, an update from Hungry Studio confirmed that the game has returned to the Play Store, although no explanation was provided for its brief absence. In January, Hungry Studio reported that Block Blast had achieved remarkable milestones, with 70 million daily active users and 300 million monthly active users across over 200 countries. The game was a leader in download charts for 2025, closely following Roblox in the rankings. In its debut year, 2023, Block Blast was the fifth most downloaded game of the year. Jason Wang, VP of Hungry Studio, highlighted the studio's rigorous approach to optimization, stating that they conduct over 50 A/B tests weekly involving various features, visuals, and gameplay mechanics. Despite a high failure rate of about 97%, Wang views this as a strength in their development strategy. He also emphasized that user acquisition (UA) strategies play a crucial role in the game’s growth, acknowledging the competitive landscape of UA, and noting that developers can no longer rely solely on these strategies to succeed.

Block Blast Disappears from Google Play Store

Hungry Studio's popular mobile puzzle game, Block Blast, is no longer available for download on Google Play. Reports indicate that while the game remains accessible on the iOS App Store, users attempting to access its Google Play page in the UK receive a message stating, "we're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server." Similar issues have been noted for the game's Google Play pages in other countries, leaving its removal shrouded in uncertainty. As of now, the reasons behind the game's absence from the platform have not been disclosed, and inquiries have been made to both Hungry Studio and Google Play for clarification. Since its launch in 2021, Block Blast has gained immense popularity, amassing an estimated 868 million installs according to AppMagic data. By January 2026, Hungry Studio reported that the game had achieved 70 million daily active users and 300 million monthly active users worldwide. This remarkable success contributed to Hungry Studio's ranking as the 42nd top mobile game maker in 2025.

UnGodly Launches July 30, 2026, Pre-Registration Now Open

Azra Games has announced the release date for its new dark fantasy character-collector action RPG, UnGodly, set to launch on July 30, 2026, for both Android and iOS. Pre-registration is currently available, allowing players to secure their spot ahead of the release. Initially slated for a Winter 2025 launch, the game was pushed to Q1 2026. UnGodly emphasizes hands-on real-time combat, featuring powerful elemental combos and a variety of gameplay elements. Players can expect cinematic story missions, side quests, open-world PvE content, and boss battles. Set in the world of Tarsea, which is threatened by an entity known as the Devouring, players begin their journey as a mercenary named Vander. Uncovering Hidden Stories in Mobile Gaming

Several compelling stories from mobile gaming have not received the attention they deserve. One such piece covers Apple's acquisition of Playdeo, a London-based game studio known for developing ‘playable video’ games. Apple brought the studio’s cofounders to Cupertino to work on a secretive mixed reality headset project. This acquisition was later confirmed by investor and analyst Matthew Ball, who shared details on social media before being asked to remove his posts. Another story worth revisiting is the rise and fall of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, which saw millions of players during its peak. Despite its popularity, the article garnered fewer readers than expected. It also features exclusive behind-the-scenes photos of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, along with a video of Kim wishing Glu's then-CEO, Niccolo de Masi, a happy birthday. Following that, the second part of the Kim K story delves into Glu's other celebrity games, including those featuring Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, and Nicki Minaj. This piece provides more exclusive content and discusses what a potential Glu 2.0 could look like, leading to the eventual creation of Ares Interactive. We also explored insights from an anonymous former senior manager at King in an article titled The Secret Developer. This piece emerged after King announced layoffs, discussing the company’s management practices, staff culture, and its approach to AI. However, it did not resonate as much as anticipated among readers. Ubisoft's Wild Arena Survivors, initially launched as a battle royale game in August 2022, was revealed through our investigation to have been intended as a Far Cry mobile title. The project was beta-tested under a different name but was ultimately pulled from app stores in April 2023 after failing to meet financial expectations. The article on Plague Inc. highlights how the game gained renewed relevance during the COVID-19 pandemic, serving both as entertainment and an educational tool. This prompted the Chinese government to intervene, leading to its removal from the App Store in China. Devolver’s attempt to satirize mobile free-to-play mechanics with its own game, featuring characters from its catalog, didn’t achieve significant success despite its creative concept. Released in January 2023, the game remains available but lacked traction in the market. Philipp Stollenmayer, creator of Bacon: The Game, shared insights on his unique approach to game development and marketing in a candid interview, underscoring his intriguing perspective despite a lower profile in the gaming community. Lastly, HyperBeard's story reveals the studio's evolution into a successful creator of ‘cute-casual’ mobile games after facing financial challenges, including a hefty FTC fine and near-bankruptcy. The studio's resilience and strategic decisions, such as outsourcing to talented developers in Mexico, have played a crucial role in its success.

Toma Komitski on Transmedia Strategies at PGC Barcelona 2026

Toma Komitski, head of sales and business development at Chase A Cloud, will discuss transmedia strategies at PGC Barcelona on June 15th and 16th. In anticipation of his talk, Komitski shared insights on how smaller studios can learn from successful transmedia adaptations, contrasting their approaches with those of established intellectual properties (IPs). In recent years, transmedia has evolved, with video game adaptations like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, and Detective Pikachu receiving praise for their narratives that resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers. These films have managed to appeal to diverse audiences while remaining true to their source material, incorporating detail and Easter eggs that enhance the experience. Beyond films, transmedia now encompasses TV shows, anime, and web series, with mobile franchises such as Angry Birds and Clash of Clans expanding into multi-medium brands. Komitski emphasizes the importance of aligning budgets with media intent to avoid financial pitfalls: "If you don't align your budget with the intent of the media, you’ll go broke before the ecosystem matures." He advocates for integrating transmedia concepts from the outset of game development but advises against overextending too early. "Plan globally, execute locally," he stresses, recommending that studios wait for market signals before launching additional products like series or board games. Chase A Cloud operates as a hybrid studio specializing in animation and production management, having collaborated with major brands like LEGO and National Geographic for nearly two decades. Komitski notes the studio's experience with their own IP, Khalo the Zmeyborn, which has transitioned from books to board games and is set to launch a global mobile game this summer, along with a feature film currently in production. He underscores the need for developers to collaborate with partners who understand the nuances of different media formats. For instance, adapting a game into a series requires a different approach than treating episodes as extended cinematics. "They are fundamentally different cultures," he points out, advising studios to focus on the essence of their narrative rather than just technical execution. When considering transmedia for mobile games, Komitski highlights a different strategy due to the inherently wide reach of mobile titles. The challenge lies in establishing deeper emotional connections with players. "The potentially biggest mistake mobile devs could make is thinking their transmedia needs to look like their game," he warns. Instead, he suggests that mobile expansions should provide a richer experience that fosters long-term loyalty and reduces user acquisition costs. Successful transmedia projects like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie have demonstrated the potential for huge box office returns, with the former grossing nearly $1.4 billion in 2023. Komitski notes that for transmedia adaptations to succeed, they must offer something new that the original medium could not provide, such as scale and emotional depth. However, he cautions smaller IPs against aiming for immediate theatrical releases, advocating for high-resonance, low-friction platforms like web series or comics that allow for experimentation and community building without exorbitant costs. Komitski concludes that studios should pursue transmedia opportunities proportionally, recognizing that success on smaller platforms is essential before seeking larger projects. "In transmedia, you earn the right to the big screen by winning the small screens first," he summarizes.
