Orna Survives Eight Years Defying Mobile Gaming Trends

Since its launch in 2016, Orna has distinguished itself as a robust alternative to the flurry of location-based games that followed Pokémon Go. This fantasy-RPG has amassed 4.5 million downloads, crafted initially by a single developer. Unlike its competitors such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and The Walking Dead: Our World, Orna has thrived without succumbing to monetization trends. Northern Forge, the studio behind Orna, maintains a lean team of just nine employees and has steadfastly avoided incorporating pay-to-win mechanics, paywalls, or gacha elements over its eight-year lifespan. Founder Nate Beacham attributes the game's success to prioritizing community building over profit-driven design, stating, “Our survival comes down to the fact that we chose to build a strong community instead of an economy first.” Beacham emphasizes that sustainable gameplay does not require exploitative monetization strategies. As the community and team expanded, Northern Forge introduced new paid content that was entirely optional, ensuring players' trust remained intact. The studio has fostered its community through platforms like Discord and has often recruited from its player base, benefiting from their existing knowledge and passion. This connection not only strengthens development but also enriches the player experience. Beacham highlights Orna's impact on players' physical health and mental well-being through its gamified walking features, mirroring the fitness aspects seen in Pokémon Go. The game's community has even contributed to localizing Orna into 18 languages. As Northern Forge prepares for a content drop at the 2026 Green Game Jam, it remains committed to human-driven design, rejecting the use of AI in their development process. Beacham asserts, “If it’s in contrast to the way a lot of the industry is heading, that’s okay with us. We believe it’s a huge USP and our community is all about it.”

GTA VI Launch May Shift Mobile Gaming Spending

A recent survey by FirstLook reveals that the launch of GTA VI could significantly impact player spending in certain mobile game genres. With 94% of respondents indicating plans to purchase the game, nearly a third of players expect to reduce their overall spending on games during the release window in November and December 2026. The survey, which included 2,000 players from the UK and the US, found that 29% anticipate spending less on games during this period. Players expect GTA VI to be priced around $78, which is below the rumored $100 price point. Notably, 59% of those surveyed believe the rumored price is too high, while 40% consider $100 to be a fair price. Eden Chen, CEO of FirstLook, explained to PocketGamer.biz that the potential impact on mobile gaming will likely be felt most in genres that share audiences with core PC and console titles. While casual mobile games are expected to remain stable, the mid-core segment may experience a decline as players redirect their attention and spending towards GTA VI. Chen noted that previous major releases have not typically disrupted the mobile market significantly, but he believes GTA VI could be an exception due to the industry's response to its launch. He highlighted that the movement of console and PC developers away from the November release schedule suggests widespread anticipation for GTA VI, which is also reflected in the survey's findings of expected decreased consumer spending during the launch period. According to Chen, while casual titles like Monopoly GO! and Royal Match are likely safe, mid-core strategy, role-playing, and shooter games may see reduced player engagement, given their overlap with the core console gaming audience.

Pixel Flow Surpasses $100M, Mobile Spending Rises in May

Pixel Flow has crossed the $100 million mark in in-app purchase (IAP) revenue since its release in August 2025, according to data from Appmagic analyzed by game developer Kavindu Priyanath. This makes Loom Games’ title only the third hybrid-casual puzzle game to achieve this milestone, following Screwdom at $120 million and Color Block Jam at $148 million. The hybrid-casual puzzle genre is performing well in 2026, with the top ten games generating over $270 million in the first five months, compared to approximately $340 million for the entirety of 2025. In May, global consumer spending on mobile games reached $6.6 billion, marking a 2% month-over-month increase according to estimates from Sensor Tower. The United States contributed 29.6% of this revenue, leading ahead of China (16.8% for iOS only) and Japan (12%). Tencent’s Honor of Kings maintained its position as the top-grossing game in May, bolstered by robust live-ops in China. Dream’s Royal Match climbed to second place in terms of worldwide revenue, while Century’s Whiteout Survival held steady in third. Mobile game downloads also saw a 5% increase month-over-month, totaling 3.77 billion in May. India led the download charts with 703 million downloads, making up 18.7% of the total, followed by the US at 7.4% and Brazil at 6.3%. Lessmore’s Arrows Puzzle Escape became the most downloaded mobile game globally in May, moving up two spots, while Hungry’s Block Blast fell to second. Roblox also climbed to third place, with Garena’s Free Fire and Oakever’s Arrows Go! completing the top five. Neverness to Everness, which launched globally on April 29, has seen 9.3 million downloads and generated over $28 million in IAP revenue for publisher Perfect World. The largest markets for this title are Japan and China, accounting for 43% and 28% of the IAP spending respectively, while South Korea and the US contributed 11% and 10%. The recent Pokémon Go fest in Copenhagen attracted 614,000 players, marking the first sold-out event of its kind in Europe, with 60,000 tickets sold. During the event, players caught a total of 78.64 million Pokémon over the weekend from June 12-14. European mobile app studio Luni has secured $14 million in user acquisition financing from PvX Partners, which will primarily support scaling its micro-drama platform, Shorts. Luni is also known for developing game-related apps such as Clash Mini Walkthrough Tricks, although it has a broader portfolio including Fitness Coach and Scanner. A survey commissioned by gaming fintech company ZBD revealed that 90% of mobile game developers are considering implementing in-game loyalty systems to enhance player retention and engagement. Out of 195 senior developers surveyed in the US and UK, 31% are actively testing these systems, while 38% are planning to integrate them into their games. Additionally, 51% identified balancing monetization with player experience as a significant challenge, and many have increased their retention and reengagement budgets in the past year.

Affle Acquires AdColony Assets to Boost Mobile Advertising

Affle has officially acquired select assets from AdColony, including its SDKs, technology platform, and brand integrations, as part of its strategy to expand its mobile advertising reach. This move aligns with Affle's ambitious 10X growth strategy, aiming to enhance its AI-driven consumer conversion platform. The asset purchase agreement, finalized with Digital Turbine, encompasses AdColony's Android and iOS SDKs, technology infrastructure, and mediation platform integrations, along with the brand name and domain. Roblox Introduces Kids and Select Accounts with Enhanced Age Controls

Roblox has launched new account types—Roblox Kids and Roblox Select—aimed at enhancing age-based controls for younger users. These accounts come with stricter default settings, including the disabling of chat for Roblox Kids accounts. Users who haven't completed an age verification cannot access chat features, regardless of their actual age. Parents are given tools to manage chat settings, designate trusted friends, control game access, and set spending limits through parental controls. The Roblox Kids accounts are specifically designed for younger children, enforcing the strictest restrictions on content and features. In contrast, Roblox Select accounts cater to older children and younger teens, allowing them access to a wider range of age-appropriate content and gradually expanding chat features. To qualify for inclusion in the Kids and Select game catalogues, experiences must pass additional reviews that go beyond the standard moderation processes. Developers aiming to feature their content in these categories must complete ID verification, enable two-factor authentication, and either subscribe to Roblox or pay a refundable publishing fee. Furthermore, Roblox excludes any experiences that involve social hangouts, free-form drawing tools, or sensitive topics from these catalogues. The company has also implemented stricter chat requirements. Users must complete an age verification process to unlock chat features, while accounts belonging to users aged 16 and older necessitate verification through ID checks or facial age estimation. For parents linking their accounts to their children's profiles, they can manage chat permissions, approve trusted friends, block specific games, review friend lists, and set limits on screen time and spending. Roblox noted that while parental oversight decreases as children age, visibility tools remain in place to keep parents informed. Earlier this month, Roblox discussed its ambitions in the Middle East and its engagement with regional regulators as it prepares for its 2030 priorities.

AI's Evolution in 2026: Competition and Commerce Reshape the Digital Landscape

Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report reveals how Generative AI is transforming competition, consumer behavior, and monetization across mobile, web, and digital advertising. What began with chatbots in 2023 has evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem that includes AI assistants, AI-driven shopping, and the quick expansion of AI messaging across various platforms. The report highlights three key developments defining AI in 2026: the competition challenging ChatGPT, the impact of AI agents on shopping, and AI's emergence as a new discovery platform for advertising. ChatGPT remains the leading AI assistant, becoming the fastest mobile app to reach one billion monthly active users in May 2026, achieving this in just three years, surpassing TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Despite the emergence of new competitors, the market remains concentrated, with ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek accounting for nearly 90% of all time spent on AI assistant apps in Q1 2026. However, competition is intensifying at the edges. ChatGPT’s True Audience share dropped below 50% for the first time in March 2026, as Google Gemini and Claude gained traction in global markets. Google Gemini has expanded notably in Europe, the US, Japan, and South Korea, benefitting from strong Android integration. Claude has emerged as a significant challenger, with its True Audience growing 452% year-over-year in May, and its US market share climbing from 4.4% to nearly 14%. Following OpenAI's agreement with the Department of War, ChatGPT experienced a surge in uninstalls, peaking at around 200% above its average during the week of March 9–15, with many users switching to Claude, which recorded more daily downloads than ChatGPT during a brief period. AI assistants are increasingly shaping how consumers discover and evaluate products online, especially in research-heavy sectors like electronics and fashion. From Q4 2024 to Q1 2026, GenAI referral traffic to shopping sites surged across all major retail categories, with computers and consumer electronics leading the way, seeing nearly a fourfold increase in traffic. Retailers like Walmart and Target, leveraging AI assistants, reported GenAI referral shares surpassing 1.5%, while Amazon lagged due to its more closed ecosystem. Early AI-driven shopping systems, such as Amazon's Rufus and Walmart's Sparky, are influencing user behavior, with Rufus users converting at nearly double the rate of non-users, and Sparky showing rapid adoption and increased order values. As AI adoption grows, it is becoming a crucial discovery layer in digital ecosystems, supplementing search and social media. In early 2026, ChatGPT began testing advertisements, and by May, ad impressions had increased more than sevenfold since March. Although penetration remains low, AI platforms are evolving into new channels for advertisers, particularly in sectors such as shopping, software, travel, and financial services. Notably, AI brands are becoming significant advertisers themselves, with GenAI advertising spending tripling in the US during Q1 2026, as OpenAI and Anthropic ramped up their investments by 800% and 1,184% year-over-year, respectively. More than 200,000 apps now reference AI in their descriptions, with AI-related advertising spending reaching $1.3 billion globally in Q1 2026. The report indicates a broader trend: AI is transitioning from a standalone category to an integrated layer across the digital economy. In the assistant market, dominance is giving way to competition, while in commerce and advertising, AI is reshaping how discovery and conversion occur. These shifts suggest that 2026 marks a pivotal year for AI as it integrates more deeply into everyday digital interactions.

38-0 Joins Top Ten UK App Store Games as Second Amateur Football Drafting Hit

The rise of football drafting games has led to a significant milestone with the entry of 38-0 into the UK App Store's top ten. This amateur-made game, crafted in just a few days by hobbyist Josh Pavey, has achieved over 100,000 downloads on iOS since its launch on June 11, without the backing of marketing or PR. Remarkably, it even topped the Simulation genre chart for a brief period. As of now, 38-0 holds the 26th position in the overall games chart, positioned between Pixel Flow and Royal Kingdom, while also surpassing popular titles like Chess.com, Subway Surfers, and Township. Pavey revealed that the game's primary markets include the UK, Ireland, EU, US, Australia, and New Zealand. A version for Android is currently awaiting approval. Pavey, who works in advertising, is a self-taught coder with eight years of experience in side projects. Inspired by the recent popularity of basketball drafting game 82-0 and similar web apps circulating in social media, he aimed to create a genuine iOS football drafting application. "I can't take credit for the idea, especially after seeing 82-0 and other games online recently," he stated. "It's surprising that no one had ventured into app development before!" He utilized a variety of tools, including Opus, Gemini, ChatGPT, Cursor, and OpenCode, to develop the game rapidly, incorporating multiplayer functionality through Cloudflare Workers. "I likely wouldn’t have built it as quickly without AI, as it significantly accelerated mockups and testing," Pavey explained. He encourages others with access to similar models to explore their creativity, noting that advancements in AI have been remarkable in recent months. Since its launch, 38-0 has undergone several updates, adding new game modes, multiplayer features, and sharing options. Currently, the game does not include any monetization, as Pavey enjoys the rising player count and retention. "I've only had about 10 hours of sleep since Friday, constantly working on new features since the App Store surge… thanks to Celsius drinks and Starbucks for keeping me energized!" he added.
