Consume Me, Seumas McNally Grand Prize Winner, Launches on iOS

Consume Me, the recipient of the 2025 Seumas McNally Grand Prize, is now available for iPhone and iPad. Developer Jenny Jiao Hsia shared the announcement on Bluesky, expressing her belief that mobile is the ideal platform for the game. Hsia mentioned, "I genuinely think this is the best way to play the game. And I had always envisioned Consume Me as a phone game because I’m not really a gamer… I made this game for my younger self who did not really play games on the computer." The game features a collection of food-themed minigames and time management challenges, all woven together with a narrative that reflects Hsia's experiences in high school. Hsia and her collaborator AP Thomson began developing the game during their undergraduate studies, and a decade later, they achieved significant recognition, including winning the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Game Festival in 2025. In addition to this prestigious award, the game was also honored with the Nuovo award in the same year and later received a social impact award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2026. Furthermore, the Mac version of Consume Me is nominated for a social impact award at this year’s Apple Design Awards.

PUBG Mobile’s Hero’s Crown Mode Aims to Revitalize Casual Gameplay

The newly introduced Hero's Crown Mode in PUBG Mobile is positioned as a significant step towards revitalizing the game's casual gaming segment. Through various Trial Challenges and strategically designed main-event locations, players are given the opportunity to make tactical decisions that can influence their gameplay experience. A key aspect of this new mode is the return of the Nimbus Islands, which has been instrumental in its initial success. Although PUBG Mobile remains a dominant force in competitive esports, it has been experiencing a gradual decline in its casual player base, particularly within conventional classic modes. However, the 4.4 version update, featuring the Hero's Crown themed mode, could potentially alter this trend. In previous updates, PUBG Mobile introduced various elements to enhance themed modes, such as unique abilities in the Evolving Universe mode and plant-themed items in Primewood Genesis. Yet, these modes often fell short of player expectations. With the Hero's Crown, it appears that PUBG Mobile has successfully integrated all necessary components for a compelling casual gaming experience. The Nimbus Islands made their debut in late 2021, collaborating with the League of Legends: Arcane series. This earlier introduction was well-received, offering players a free extra life opportunity and a chance for additional finishes. In the latest update, the Crown Abode mini-game mode allows the top four squads in a match to ascend to a Nimbus Island for a showdown, where they can battle the AI boss, Helios, and gain him as a companion. This addition enhances the gameplay, offering more avenues for player achievements. The Hero’s Crown Mode features four distinct main-event locations, namely Mylta, Ferry Pier, Boatyard, and Yasnaya Polyana. This variety provides players with options to land in areas with fewer opponents or better supplies, significantly impacting match strategy. These locations also evoke nostalgia, reminiscent of the popular Ocean Odyssey themed mode from version 3.3, which was known for its unique aesthetic and gameplay. Adding to the competitive edge, the Hero's Crown mode includes five Trial Challenges inspired by Greek mythology. Completing these trials grants players Glory Points, essential for accessing the Crown Abode mode within Nimbus Islands. This latest iteration of Trial Challenges follows the previously popular formats, which successfully engaged players with thrilling gameplay. Special powers, such as the Wax Wings and Battle Flag, contribute dynamically to the gameplay by providing unique advantages during encounters. These elements are crucial in setting the Hero's Crown Mode apart from standard battle royale formats, enhancing overall enjoyment and strategy. After extensive playtime with the Hero's Crown Mode, it is evident that this themed experience has the potential to be one of the most popular modes in PUBG Mobile. However, the developers must address server stability and cheating issues to ensure a satisfactory gaming experience. Optimism surrounds the Hero's Crown Mode, and further exploration is anticipated.

Vietnamese Games Dominate Global Downloads in 2025

Vietnamese games achieved a remarkable 4.9 billion downloads in 2025, solidifying the country’s position as a global leader in game distribution. According to GameGeek’s Vietnam Mobile Gaming Industry Overview Report 2025, simulation, puzzle, and arcade games accounted for 3.3 billion of these downloads, representing 67% of the total. This performance places Vietnam as the second-strongest nation worldwide in terms of game installs, with an impressive rate of 9,300 installs per minute. In terms of genre-specific success, Vietnamese simulation, puzzle, and arcade titles collectively dominated the global market, capturing nearly 11% of all downloads in these categories. These genres outperformed games from notable regions including China, the United States, and Turkey, showcasing the strength of Vietnam’s game development sector. The report also highlights key milestones in Vietnam’s gaming history, such as the establishment of VNG, the country’s first game publisher, in the 2000s, and the global phenomenon Flappy Bird in 2014. The pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 marked a peak for mobile gaming, but five years later, Vietnam has approximately 210 actively operating game studios. Notably, 38% of these studios were founded between 2020 and 2023, indicating a growing maturity in the local gaming ecosystem. In 2025 alone, more than 27,000 Vietnamese games launched, with in-app purchases seeing significant growth of 83% year-over-year. This shift reflects a broader trend, as 73% of studios moved away from ad-dependent revenue models towards in-app purchases or hybrid approaches. However, the landscape is evolving; monetization models, demands for live operations, and global publishing capabilities are becoming increasingly complex. After peaking at 5.4 billion downloads in 2024, annual downloads have since declined, and the industry has faced challenges, including studio closures and restructuring, with some studios struggling to establish international connections for global growth.

Global Game Jam Launches Pilot to Connect Indie Studios with Talent

Global Game Jam, in collaboration with Endless Foundation, has introduced a pilot initiative aimed at linking indie studios with emerging game development talent through short-term paid tasks. This program, known as GGJ micro-missions: Small projects, big impact, focuses on quick assignments in areas such as artwork, audio production, and quality assurance (QA) testing, typically designed to be completed within 48 hours. The initiative intends to engage over 500 participants globally and produce between 1,500 and 2,000 paid micro-project assignments in its inaugural year. The pilot addresses two key challenges in the industry: the need for short-term production support for indie studios and the lack of opportunities for new talent to gain practical experience. Indie studios will have the ability to post smaller, task-based requests, allowing them to receive original creative assets and QA support from selected participants. In return, participants will earn paid opportunities, gain real-world experience, and obtain materials to enhance their portfolios. As part of the program, Global Game Jam will also distribute microgrants of up to $2,500 to at least 25 indie studios, who will collaborate with GGJ to create micro-projects and recruit participants from the global community. Art and audio contributors are expected to receive compensation ranging from $50 to $100 per assignment, while QA testers will earn between $25 and $50. Additionally, onboarding and bug-reporting training will be provided. QA testing will utilize a shared Bugzilla system managed by Global Game Jam, allowing participants to submit bug reports automatically forwarded to the respective studios. Currently, the GGJ micro-missions initiative is in a pre-launch phase, with an interest form open for sign-ups.

This marks the fourth round of approvals in 2026, bringing the total to 779 licensed games for the year, of which 754 are domestic and 25 are imported. The approvals reflect a 19% increase year-to-date in game licensing compared to the same period last year, according to Niko Partners. Among the newly approved games, 135 are mobile titles, two are for PC, and 17 are cross-platform. The imported titles include two mobile games alongside two cross-platform releases.
