Mobile Games: Rising Costs and Shifting Strategies

Mobile Games: Rising Costs and Shifting Strategies

The mobile gaming landscape is shifting dramatically, and industry insiders are raising alarms about the rising barriers to entry for new developers. Christopher Kassulke, a Mobile Maven, highlights the stark reality: "Adapt or die – the games market is changing every 180 days. Get used to it or leave." This sentiment reflects the increasing costs associated with mobile game production, platform fees, and the necessity for live operations. Despite mobile games being the largest revenue-generating sector in gaming, newcomers are finding it tougher than ever to break in. Kassulke points out that while the technical barriers have lowered—thanks to accessible development tools like AI, Godot, and Unity—the real challenge lies in visibility. He notes that the user acquisition (UA) landscape is unforgiving, with cost per installs (CPI) for free-to-play (F2P) titles often ranging between $5 and $10. Moreover, live operations and server costs are climbing, making ongoing updates and fresh content increasingly expensive. He believes that while there's a lucrative $90 billion market, finding a profitable niche amidst the competition, particularly in hypercasual and F2P sectors, is akin to navigating a red ocean. Joanne Lacey echoes these concerns, observing that mobile is no longer the default entry point it once was. Over the past two decades, mobile game development has seen several commercial shifts. Initially, the proliferation of devices and platforms created both complexity and opportunity. The launch of the iPhone and App Store in 2008 fundamentally altered the landscape, providing developers with unprecedented global reach. However, in the post-pandemic world, Lacey argues that the barriers to entry have flipped: while technical development is easier, the sophisticated and costly nature of the F2P market has made commercialization daunting. She advocates for leaner studios that focus on creativity and community while outsourcing expertise in areas like user acquisition. Nilay Patel adds another layer to this discussion, noting that mobile still offers relatively low entry barriers in terms of development costs compared to platforms like Steam, which takes a hefty 30% cut of revenue. However, he points out that the competition among established mobile leaders is fierce. These companies have conducted extensive A/B testing and possess advanced tech stacks, making it challenging for newcomers to carve out a space. Patel also emphasizes that many mobile games rely heavily on ads for user acquisition, which have become more expensive due to increased competition and changes in data privacy regulations. As the mobile gaming industry enters what some are calling the "industrialized gaming era," the challenges for new developers are more pronounced than ever. The landscape is evolving rapidly, and while there are still opportunities for innovation and success, newcomers must navigate a complicated web of costs, competition, and market dynamics.

This report will unveil the Top 30 Nordic Game Makers list, but even without this intel, it’s clear that Sweden is a powerhouse in the gaming world. Hit titles like Landfall's Peak, Embark's Arc Raiders, and DICE's Battlefield 6 have showcased the country's remarkable output across various platforms. According to the Swedish trade association Dataspelsbranschen’s report, the Swedish games sector saw a revenue spike of 6.4% in 2024, reaching SEK 36.8 billion. This remarkable figure represents a staggering 7,500% growth over the past two decades. When factoring in revenue from overseas subsidiaries, the total soars to SEK 73 billion, with Swedish games accounting for 3% of the nation’s service exports. Notably, industry giants like King, the creator of Candy Crush Saga, and Mojang, the minds behind Minecraft, generated a combined revenue exceeding SEK 11 billion in Sweden for 2024. The landscape is also evolving, with 105 new gaming companies founded in 2024, bringing the total to 1,101—a 9% increase from the previous year. However, the report also highlights that around 70 companies either shut their doors, merged, or transitioned out of the gaming sector during the same period. The industry employed 9,130 individuals in Sweden, with women making up approximately 2,150 of the workforce. The employee count saw a modest rise of 0.5% compared to 2023. Beyond Sweden, these companies employed more than 11,000 staff globally. In terms of company size, 19 firms boasted over 100 employees, while 122 had 10 or more, and 202 offered jobs to five or more individuals. In 2024, ten companies reported revenues exceeding SEK 1 billion, and 46 surpassed SEK 110 million in sales—an increase of six companies compared to the previous year. Geographically, Stockholm remains the epicenter of Sweden's gaming scene, hosting 464 companies and employing 5,897 people by the end of 2024. Following closely is Skåne with 146 companies and 1,536 staff, and Västra Götaland with 156 companies and 800 employees. Despite ongoing challenges in the global gaming industry, including economic fluctuations and an increasingly competitive mobile market, Sweden's gaming sector continues to thrive with new titles and live games rolling out into 2025 and beyond. FirstLook Agent Transforms Player Data into Marketing Campaigns

FirstLook has unveiled the FirstLook Agent, an AI tool aimed at helping game studios streamline their marketing efforts by consolidating fragmented player and community data into actionable campaigns. This innovative platform allows studios to craft campaigns using straightforward text prompts, enhancing their ability to analyze sentiment, identify player behaviors, segment audiences, generate relevant content, and deploy targeted marketing strategies across specific player groups. The FirstLook Agent supports analysis across various platforms, including Twitch, Discord, TikTok, and Steam, ensuring that marketing efforts reach players where they are most active. Integrated reporting and analytics enable studios to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns efficiently. Notably, companies like Team17, Avalanche Studios Group, Krafton, and Remedy Entertainment are already leveraging this technology to enhance their marketing initiatives. Additionally, the FirstLook Agent can connect with AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT through FirstLook’s MCP server, allowing teams to initiate campaigns directly from chat-based interfaces. This integration is particularly beneficial in an era where game marketing has become increasingly complex due to the proliferation of communication channels and the overwhelming amount of data available. Robert van Hoesel, founder and CPO of FirstLook, emphasized the challenges community managers face in navigating multiple channels and gathering player insights. He noted that community managers often spend significant time sifting through Discord chats, Steam reviews, and playtime data to gauge player sentiment. With the FirstLook Agent, all relevant signals regarding player engagement—from sentiment and playtime to purchases and community discussions—are centralized, empowering studios to act decisively. This capability facilitates re-engaging inactive players, crafting announcements, and addressing community issues proactively, ultimately fostering stronger player relationships at scale.

Lilith Games’ Clash of Critters Launches Globally Today

Lilith Games has officially launched its new mobile game, Clash of Critters, globally on both iOS and Android. After spending a month in soft launch, this title combines elements of tower defense, idle progression, and creature collection, featuring over 100 unique 'Tataris' for players to raise, feed, and train for battle. Each Tatari can be enhanced through feeding or evolution, allowing them to transform into new forms, while also introducing strategic layers with various elemental types such as water, rock, and grass. Notable Tataris include the hot-tempered cat Flameow and the goofy llama Lollama, designed with a cute and cozy aesthetic. Players have the option to purchase Glitter Fruit, which triggers mutations in the Tataris, granting them Glitter Forms. To encourage in-game spending, Lilith Games has introduced a limited-time "sprinting pack" aimed at converting free-to-play users into paying players. The company plans to monetize Clash of Critters in the long term through weekly and monthly paid passes. Clash of Critters initially released in most regions on April 21st, 2026, during its soft launch phase. Today marks its global release, although markets like China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan remain excluded. This strategy mirrors that of Lilith's previous title, AFK Journey, which saw a Western-focused launch followed by an Asian release, with China becoming a significant market post-launch. Vincent Ou, Lilith’s head of strategy and investment, previously noted the increasing expectations of players, emphasizing the need for developers to be more thoughtful and efficient in creating new titles.

Arctic Game Introduces Six-Month Incubation Model for Indie Studios

Arctic Game has launched a six-month incubation model designed to assist indie game studios in transitioning from prototype to market-ready releases. This initiative responds to a growing trend in the industry where publishers and investors demand earlier evidence of traction and market validation. Unlike traditional incubators that emphasize lengthy development cycles, this program focuses on expediting project scopes, facilitating quicker releases, and fostering learning through the process of shipping games. The incubation model requires participating teams to enter with existing concepts and prototypes. Over the six months, the emphasis will be on balancing commercial potential, creative identity, intellectual property development, and community feedback. Given the shift towards later-stage publishing agreements, Arctic Game aims to fill the financing gap that early-stage indie developers face. The incubation process kicked off in November 2025, with final pitches scheduled for June 2026. Daniel Wilén, managing director of Arctic Game, highlighted the challenge indie developers encounter as publishers tend to initiate deals at more advanced stages, necessitating proof of traction and market engagement. Tim Leinert from Arctic Game noted that this program is not a one-size-fits-all solution. While longer development cycles may suit some projects, the incubator is tailored to help teams scope their projects realistically and reduce risks to achieve quicker market releases. This discussion about accelerating sustainable indie game development coincides with significant upcoming industry events in the Nordic region, including Pocket Gamer Connects Summit Malmö on May 27th and 28th, followed by PGC Helsinki on October 20th and 21st.
